ARTIST STATEMENTS

  • Saddam Jumaily’s artworks frequently delve into the profound strata of life, uncovering hidden contradictions and a sense of dark humor provoked by moral, political, and authoritarian paradoxes.

These paradoxes aim to beautify reality through discourses and theories that effectively distort it—a form of deception that only becomes apparent at critical junctures of human existence, when higher values are abandoned in favor of an essentially unethical mode of behavior. At such moments, humans lose their grasp on reality, allowing appearances to run past their control and unfold in a rudimentary, random fashion resembling hallucinations, ones that lie beyond the capacities of reason and morality.

Saddam Jumaily delves into the raw “flesh” of life—a reality that cannot be exposed by traditional art which merely depicts life at the surface level. Instead, Jumaily’s work plunges into the fabric of our daily contradictions, shaped by those who champion moral ideals yet govern them from another vantage point: politicians, religious leaders, cultural institutions, scientific revelations, humanitarian organizations, and activist movements. Each of these fields has an obscure side that his art tries to unmask, acting as some sort of compass that maps out the hidden behaviors animating the chaos of our existence.

  • My latest series stands at the crossroads of personal memory and broader political upheaval, capturing the complex realities of the present-day Arab World through a nuanced interplay of crisis and hope. Drawing from my multicultural background—being born in Libya to Palestinian-Jordanian parents and having spent some of my formative years in Saudi Arabia—I channel a tapestry of perspectives into my art. Layers of collage, printmaking, and mixed media converge on canvas, where bold patches of color contrast against monochromatic ones, illuminating human resilience in the face of chaos and conflict.

At the heart of my practice lies a deeply emotional, political, and philosophical core. Echoes of nostalgia infuse my work, revealed in both the fragmented photographic imagery—with archival, public domain photographs having become a recurring element for me—and the deliberate bursts of intense color. My architectural background surfaces through precise linear elements and the structuring of each piece, aiming to depict the complexity of the stories I weave.

In these canvases, I navigate the terrain between struggle and light, urging viewers to recognize the ever-present possibility of transformation even in the most turbulent of circumstances. Through my controlled yet layered approach, I offer a vivid chronicle of crisis and endurance—one where bold color fields symbolize hope, and meticulously orchestrated fragments speak to a collective pursuit of balance and a renewed sense of possibility.

  • “Silence in Nature” is a collection of untamed landscapes born of my attempt to untangle myself from the anxieties and rigidity of daily life, and to ground myself in the movement through meditative embroidery. The spontaneous twists and textures of the topography is the result of the raw interaction between the upcycled fabrics, beading and yarn used in its creation. Despite its limited color palette, the piece is rich in detail; its terrain brought to life through a variety of transparencies and exploratory stitching.

  • In my artworks, I want my creatures to be more bizarre and more lively, seeking life, self-sufficient, living its contemporary ordeal. The ordeal of being alone and besieged by the complexities, intricacies and restrictions of life.

My works are a condemnation of war, pain and sadness, but in the language of art and beauty, so as not to offend the viewer's eyes, and to be a witness to this era. I also practice reviving humans and creatures in the language of abstraction and expression and modeling them with a contemporary artistic discourse. That is, I breathe life into damaged things.

The theme used in my artworks is the theme of threads, and when they are intertwined, they lead to the generation of knots that are difficult to unravel and difficult to solve. It is a metaphor whose meaning opens up to the complexity, fragmentation and decline of all human values that the human situation has reached. I transformed the thread theme within the drawing area to confirm its vital action and enhance its semantic action, and also as a surface and texture that can be formed in the system of plastic art, and to confirm the graphic sense to reach the easy and difficult or to austerity to create a medium characterized by simplicity and complexity at the same time.
