What does it mean to orient from a distance to one’s ancestral land, which also orients us? How does this orientation manifest itself in our lives and works?
ما معنى أن نوجّه بوصلتنا نحو أرض أسلافنا ونحن في مكان بعيد، وأن تكون الأرض هي بوصلتنا كذلك؟ وكيف يتجلّى هذا التوجّه في حياتنا وأعمالنا؟
For artist Eman Haram who led a diasporic life in perpetual movement and across multiple exiles, land is never entirely silent; everything springs from her. Working with photography as a medium and an instrument of orientation, this exhibition explores the imperceptible ways place inhabits her memory and imagination, and how memory and imagination in turn re-orients her toward place, revealing home not as arrival or belonging, but an ongoing attunement to the echoes of the faraway land everywhere.
إيمان حرم فنانة عاشت حياة الشتات في حركة دائمة، وعبر منافي متعددة . بالنسبة إليها، الأرض ليست كيانًا صامتًا؛ فكل شيء ينبثق منها. ومن خلال وسيط التصوير الفوتوغرافي، والتعامل معه بوصفه أداةً للرؤية والإصغاء والتوجّه، يستكشف المعرض كيف يسكن المكان ذاكرتها ومخيّلتها، وكيف تُعيد الذاكرة والمخيّلة توجيهها نحو المكان. لا يعود الوطن مسألة وصول أو انتماء، بل يصبح إصغاءً مستمرًا إلى أصداء تلك الأرض البعيدة في كل مكان.
About The Artist
Eman Haram is a Palestinian artist (b. Damascus) raised in Beirut. Her work dwells on the stories and history of her ancestral land, its vast beauty and abundance, in spite of the unrelenting violence that settler-colonialism inflicts on the land and its native inhabitants. Through the use of photography, both as a coded language and a process of research harnessed critically and poetically, she creates spaces for witnessing, remembering, reassembling fragments and reimagining a battered and disappearing motherland under constant assault. Her work has been showcased in Jordan, Palestine, Syria and internationally. She presently lives between Montreal and Amman.
