SOUAD ABDELRASOUL

Born in 1974, Souad Abdelrasoul currently lives and works in Cairo. She graduated in1998 from the Faculty of Fine Arts, in 2005 she completed her master’s degree in History of Art, then in 2012 her PhD in Modern Art History. Souad’s artworks have been on display since 1998.
Her artistic practice spans the mediums of drawing, painting, sculpture and graphic design, that fuses abstract and figurative art. By depicting metamorphosed figures, Abdelrasoul doesn’t seek to visualize human physical beauty, but attempts to reflect on the connections between humans and the elements of existence like earth, metals and plants. We are part of the earth and the earth is definitely a part of each of us.
Tree-like figures, branching veins and arteries, and monstrous insect-like characters merge on canvases and busts to remind viewers of the vital bond between the interior of the human body and the exterior. By doing this, Souad reconceptualizes the way we perceive space and repurposes notions of body, science, and nature into something strikingly personal, which exalts the feminine, the emotional, the overgrowing natural, and the animalesque.
By depicting metamorphosed figures, Abdelrasoul doesn’t seek to visualize human physical beauty but attempts to rethink the connections between humans and the elements of existence like earth, water, and plants. Nature features prominently in her detailed yet provocative artwork, pushing against the human-centric perspective often found in art.
Throughout her artworks, Souad unravels the mysteries of her legendary world, urging spectators to wonder whether art follows the logic of rational choices in the world in which we live, or whether it creates its
own theory and inner logic."In our societies, human bodies, especially women, are covered, prohibited.”
Women often stand out in Abdelrasoul works as one of the main parts of creation. exploring the relationship between women and cultural value systems.
