Born in Babylon, Iraq in 1948, Jaber Alwan graduated from the Institute of Fine Art in Baghdad in 1970. In 1975, he recieved a degree in Sculpture from the Rome Academy of Fine Art. The municipality of Rome awarded him with an art achievement award 10 years after he moved to the city, making him the first foreigner to ever receive this prize.
Jaber has also held several solo and group exhibitions and has participated in Biennales across Europe and the Arab world. He has works on permanent display in various Modern Art Museums such as ones in Baghdad, Damascus, Qatar and Kuwait. His works are part of private collections around the world including the Opera House of Culture in Cairo, as well as the Gulbenkian Museum in Lisbon, the Dei Diameni Palace in Ferrara, the Academy Museum in Ravenn in addition to private collections in many cities in Russia, Japan and Chile.Today Jaber Alwan lives in Italy, but for a few years before the Syrian crisis, he had a very active atelier in Damascus.
